\"bike-details\"<\/a>We\u2019re pleased to add Scooter and Motorcycle MOT’s to our list of services at Suthers\u00a0Star Garage. Motorcycle and Scooter MOT Requirements:-
\nLIGHTS\u00a0<\/strong>Failed lights are a common cause of MOT failure on Bikes & Scooters
\nHEADLIGHTS & TAIL LIGHTS\u00a0<\/strong>must be free of chips or cracks; the headlight must\u00a0also work on main and dip beam, the main beam must shine directly ahead and the\u00a0dip slightly lower.
\nINDICATOR LIGHTS<\/strong> must all flash at a steady rate and the warning lights function\u00a0properly.
\nIf a HAZARD WARNING SYSTEM<\/strong> is fitted, all 4 indicators must flash at a steady\u00a0uniform rate.
\nBikes must have a red REFLECTOR<\/strong> on the rear of the machine, either bolted on\u00a0separately or as part of the tail light lens.
\nSTEERING<\/strong> When front wheel is raised off the ground the handlebar must not hit the tank. When the steering is fully turned lock to lock, the steering must move freely and without drag. The handlebar must be securely mounted and the grips secure. With the fork sliders held and when we push and pull on the forks, there must be no play in the steering head bearings.
\nBRAKES<\/strong>
\nBrakes are also a common cause of MOT failure in Scooters.The test looks at:
\nCheck the hoses for fluid leaks, bulges & cracking.\u00a0Check disc brakes are securely mounted and free from cracks.\u00a0Check ABS warning lights, where fitted.\u00a0Check the wheel is free to rotate without brake drag in free-wheel.\u00a0Check that brake pads\/shoes are not warn beyond limits.\u00a0Check the rear brake torque arm is secure and that fasteners are secured by selflocking nuts or castellated nuts with split-pins or R-clips
\nWHEELS & TYRES<\/strong>
\nCast wheels should be secure and free from cracks, similarly, spoked wheels will be\u00a0checked for broken, corroded, loose or bent spokes\u00a0The tyre and wheel must run free in free-wheel nor must they fould the suspension\u00a0or the mudguards\u00a0Worn wheel bearings will fail and the front and rear wheels will be checked for\u00a0alignment\u00a0Tyres must be compatible, suitable for road use and, if fitted with a direction arrow,\u00a0fitted to spin in the direction of forward wheel rotation\u00a0Tyres will be checked for tread depth and condition as well as sidewall condition.
\nSUSPENSION\u00a0<\/strong>FRONT:<\/strong>
\nNo oil leaks from anti-dive units.On bikes with swingarm suspension, there must be\u00a0no freeplay in the linkage when moved from side to side\u00a0There should be no oil visible on the fork tube or leaking down the slider around the\u00a0fork oil geras\u00a0The forks must be adequately dampened
\nREAR:<\/strong>
\nNo oil leaks around the shock absorber.No play in the swingarm or suspension\u00a0linkage bearings.Pivot bearings will be checked for wear.The shock absorber must\u00a0give adequate damping.The suspension must not foul on body parts or acessories
\nEXHAUST:<\/strong>
\nThe decibel level will be assessed at the discretion of the tester, other checks are:\u00a0The exhaust mountings must be secure and not fouling any part of the rear\u00a0suspension.\u00a0The exhaust must not be holed and free from leaks from both joints and box(es)\u00a0Replacements units, other than bikes registered before 01.Jan.1985, must have the\u00a0BSAU 193 stamp
\nFINAL DRIVE:<\/strong>
\nThe chain\/belt must not have excessive slack and be in good condition, the guard\u00a0must be secure and not fouling.\u00a0On shaft drive bikes, the drive unit must be free from oil leaks.\u00a0Both sprockets should be securely mounted and not excessively worn.
\nMORE CHECKS:<\/strong>
\nIn addition to the items mentioned above the examiner will: \u00a0Check that the HORN<\/strong> is of reasonable volume and a continuous single tone.Check for CORROSION<\/strong> on the frame and any load bearing components.\u00a0The FOOTRESTS<\/strong> must have an anti-slip surface\u00a0All major components, bodypanels and mudguards must be securely fitted. The footrests, handlebar levers and brake pedal must be securely mounted.<\/p>\n
